Elemental: Creative Art and Literary Project- Jan-Dec 2008

With this project we have taken a writer, poet & visual artist to explore the creation of sound, through movement & free expression, creating a new language based on sound and the four elements, fire, earth, air & water, the use of language & words and how this can be represented in a visual arts context.

1: Writers Workshops

Four specialist (practical) workshops have been delivered by the international playwright Charles Way working with the entire membership of Theatr Ffynnon.

The workshops explored the creation of sound through movement and free expression creating a new language based on sound and the four elements, fire, earth, air, water.

The results were notated and scribed by the writer, creating a new & original prose piece which the membership had devised. This then would be used to facilitate the visual element of the overall project and stimulate ideas for the performance piece.

1b: Poetry Workshops

4 workshops were led by the poet Patrick Jones who worked closely with the groups to create extended poems based on the elements; helping to create words and phrases often from the member’s subconscious that Patrick then crafted into poems for the exhibition & performance. The poems are entitled “Throatsuns” and will be published in the Elemental catalogue and will feature in the performance piece.

1c: Visual Art Workshops

A new & emerging artist Emma Prentice has been working with all groups in creating artwork using materials such as sand, wood, inks, etc to form the exhibition, a major part of the overall project.

Emma will interpret the words created through a mix of visual mediums for eg. using music and poetry to create fluid and muscular pieces in materials the members use on a daily basis. Some of the artwork created in the exhibition will be used to devise & create the performance piece and will link the performance to the exhibition so the project is seen as one and will put the entire project into context of the work created over the 12 months.

2: Creating the Visual Art element & Exhibition “Elemental”.
Phase 2

The visual artist will continue to work with the membership to create a visual portfolio of work that will form the exhibition.

3: Devise & produce the stage Performance to support the
  “Elemental Exhibition. Phase 3

Expanding on the work undertaken for the exhibitive aspect of the project, which includes the member’s mementos, recollections from a time gone, and other influences that are important to them as a community & as individuals, the performance will look to develop & expand on these ideas to device a performance piece that will steer the work in unexpected and exciting ways.

4: Exhibition and Performance

The final exhibition and performances will take place at the Wales Millennium Centre on Monday 8 Dec. The work will be exhibited for a period of 4 weeks with the performance opening the exhibition.
